rebuild is an unflinching look at the unionized construction sector in Cape Breton—its history, its debt to the island’s fierce labor activism, its declining reputation at the end of the twentieth century and, most powerfully, its involvement in Cape Breton’s economic recovery and in community life today.
In recent decades, Cape Breton has gained a reputation as an economically beleaguered part of Canada. But the unionized construction sector is literally rebuilding the island. rebuild looks at the industry’s involvement in economic recovery, and its passionate contributions to the community, and to life on the island. Unionized laborers and contractors are rebuilding Cape Breton—one nail at a time.
MAKING THE FILM
rebuild was produced in the spring of 2011. Shot over twelve days in dozens of locations across Cape Breton, this film features interviews with unionized tradespeople and contractors, families and community members from Cape Breton Island. Filmmakers Nik Green and Rebecca Babcock conducted over 50 interviews, collecting more than 100 hours of footage in order to tell the story of an industry and its deep commitment to the community that it has built and maintained.
